New Adventures - ‘Bring it On’ - Cochem, Germany (Day 1-2)

“All the diversity, all the charm, and all the beauty of life are made up of light and shade.” — Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina

Our first day and half in Cochem brought us beautiful weather and enlightening hikes. We were there off-season, so not everything was open during the week, but luckily we had much of Saturday and all Sunday to enjoy the weather and the atmosphere of this charming medieval Mosel-river town.

We visited the quaint Market Square and Mosel Promenade, hiked up to the Reichsburg Castle and Pinnerkreuz viewpoint, and voyaged on a Mosel River Cruise. Of course, we ate the amazing food, and tried many wines along the way - if you like white wine - this area produces some of the best white wines in the world, and has sweet, semi-sweet, and dry (trochen) — my personal favorite!

Our very steep hike to Pinnerkreuz Viewpoint and the beautiful view once we made it!

Tips 1-3 for visiting Cochem:

  1. Visit the Market Square and take a Mosel River Cruise - although both are very touristy, they are worth the picturesque sites you see.

  2. If you are capable, take the hikes to the Castle and Pinnerkreuz viewpoint for amazing panoramic views. You can also bike/drive to the castle and take the Sesselbahn (chairlift) to the Pinnerkreuz. Take a tour of the castle, it is one of the most beautiful we have visited and the guides are entertaining.

  3. Visit some wineries (you can’t miss them), taste the wine, and just enjoy some down time! (Actually, I should have made this number 1 😉.)
